Exploring the Netherlands: Rotterdam

Even though I live in the Netherlands for 4 years already, I have never really had the chance to explore one of its main cities – Rotterdam. The only placed I have visited before in Rotterdam was the Miniworld. This is why a few weeks ago we decided to spend the weekend of my boyfriends Birthday in Rotterdam to learn more about it and visit some of the newest hotspots.

Хотя в Голландии я живу уже 4 года, до недавнего времени я плохо себе представляла чем примечателен один из основных городов – Роттердам. Поэтому несколько недель назад мы решили поехать на разведку и узнать, что же стоит посмотреть в Роттердаме.

 

I wanted to surprise my love for his birthday and thought of something totally crazy – renting a hot tug! When I told my family about what I want to do they thought it was a crazy idea and weren’t sure Rob was going to like it, but it turned out to be super fun! Basically, we were swimming in a hot tub around the port of Rotterdam in our bathing suits and drinking wine. We both really enjoyed it, we were definitely the most popular people in Rotterdam that day, many photos and people waving, I think I now know what it feels like to be famous. I know it might sound crazy but it is definitely one of the funniest experiences in my life and I don’t regret doing it.

На тех выходных у моего молодого человека был День Рождения и я решила его немного удивить. Те из вас, кто смотрел передачу “Орел и Решка” о Роттердаме знают о чем идет речь, а для тех кто не знает – я решила арендовать плавучую ванну! Да, именно так! На сайте www.hottug.nl вы можете посмотреть фотографии, чтобы понять, что именно я имею в виду. Когда я рассказала своим родителям о том, какой сюрприз хочу устроить, они сказали мне, что это сумасшедшая идея и что они не уверены, что Роб этот сюрприз оценит. Но несмотря на это, ему очень понравилось! Это было одно из самых запоминающихся впечатлений на всю жизнь! Нас сфотографировали все прохожие, люди чуть ли не падали с велосипедов когда видели проплывающую мимо ванну и двух людей в купальниках с бокалами вина.

Mainport hotel

We stayed in the beautiful Mainport hotel located in the Leuvehaven of Rotterdam, right next to the famous Erasmus bridge. This award winning hotel was a wonderful place to stay with great views of the seaway. Mainport hotel is only 2 years old and is following the current Rotterdam tradition with a modern design. Our room was just amazing, what we loved the most was the bathtub in the window with the view on the Rotterdam port!

Мы остановились в отеле Mainport, который находится в самом центре Роттердама, в двух шагах от самого известного моста города – Erasmus brug. Вид на мост открывался нам из нашего номера, а также из ванны, которая стояла у самого окна!

After checking into the hotel we went for a walk in the city centre. A lot of new hotspots of Rotterdam are located on the Witte de Withstraat and the surrounding street. One of my favorite places is Hopper – apart from great coffee, they also serve delicious sandwiches and homemade cakes.

Днем мы решили прогуляться по городу и выпить кофе в кафе Hopper, где также делают очень вкусные сэндвичи и свежую выпечку.

Markthal

One of the most popular places to visit in Rotterdam is Markthal. This is a massive covered market (and apartment building at the same time) with different food stalls. It has a very special design which is also one of the reasons it attracts so many people. In terms of food, you can find anything in Markthal from donuts and churros to burgers and jamon. It is a great place to do groceries and enjoy snacks from different countries and cuisines.

Одно из самых популярных мест среди туристов в Роттердаме – недавно открывшийся крытый рынок Markthal. Помимо рынка в здании располагаются апартаменты и огромная парковка. Здание рынка очень необычно и представляет собой арку, а окна апартаментов выходят прямо внутрь. На многочисленных прилавках рынка можно найти всевозможные вкусности из разных стран мира.

A few steps away from the Markthal and Blaak station there is a very nice area with a lot of nice bars and restaurants on the water. From here you get a nice view on the Witte Huis – the first skyscraper in Europe (1898)!

В нескольких шагах от Martkhal и станции Blaak находятся набережные Spaansekade и Geldersekade с многочисленными ресторанами и кафе прямо у воды, с прекрасным видом на порт и het Witte Huis (Белый дом) – первый небоскреб Европы, построенный в 1898 году! Здесь же находятся знаменитые кубические дома.

Afterwards we went down the Boompjeskade and walked towards the Erasmus bridge. The weather was so beautiful and sunny that it made us fall in love with Rotterdam even more. I have never seen it with such blue skies! Дальше мы вышли на набережную Boompjeskade и продолжили гулять в направлении моста Erasmus. Погода в тот день в Роттердаме была потрясающая, я никогда не видела такого голубого и ясного неба в этом городе!

Deliplein is a square on the other side of the Erasmus bridge where a lot of nice restaurants and bars are located. During our time in Rotterdam we visited Restaurant Kwiezien, we had a great dinner at this restaurant. It was all well thought through, the food, the service and introduction of the menu from the owner, plus the feel of this place is perfect. I really liked the concept of small dishes, we tried many different things and left the restaurant satisfied but not too full! 

Еще одно очень приятное место в Роттердаме – небольшая площадь Deliplein по другую сторону моста Erasmus. Здесь находятся несколько ресторанов и баров, один из которых мы выбрали для праздничного ужина. В ресторане Kwiezien все блюда небольшие по размеру и стоят 9 евро, таким образом можно заказать сразу несколько блюд. Нам в этом ресторане понравилось все от подачи до сервиса и атмосферы.

I am really glad we have decided to visit Rotterdam and explore this port city of Europe. This city has many new areas that reminded me of Brisbane in Australia, however, some parts also reminded me of Amsterdam with the typical Dutch architecture. I can’t wait to explore this city even more next time!

 

Я очень рада, что мы выбрали именно Роттердам для того, чтобы отметить День Рождения Роба. Нам хотелось поехать в какое-нибудь новое место, но не путешествовать слишком далеко и Роттердам оказался идеальным вариантом. Надеюсь в скором времени узнать еще больше об этом городе и его достопримечательностях!
